Theatre Review:
Charles Lindbergh Returns To New Jersey
By Mike Warmington

I would like to tell you about a brilliant production I saw over the weekend.

"Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle" is an outstanding, well researched and compassionately performed story of Charles Lindbergh, one of New Jersey's most controversial characters. It is a one-man show featuring author and actor Steve Carroll who has prepared this work to coincide with Lindbergh's 100th birthday and the 75th anniversary of his famous transatlantic flight.

I was attracted to the show because I am a Lindbergh historian and was curious about this production at the intimate little Solomon Dwek stage in Long Branch. Mr. Carroll has obviously done his homework. As Lindy, he takes us through his early years as a barnstormer, his plans for the 1927 flight, his emergence as America's first Superstar, and his escape from public life by building a home in the remote hills of Hopewell, NJ. We suffer with him as he describes his son's kidnapping and murder, the subsequent trial in Flemington, and execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. Then we follow him to Germany where he visits the Luftwaffe as a guest of Hermann Goering, his meeting with Franklin D. Roosevelt, and sudden fall from popularity back home where he is called a Nazi sympathizer. He reflects on his family life and his final days in Hawaii.

I had never met Mr. Carroll prior to seeing this production, but was able to chat with him following the performance Saturday night. I have over 20 years of Lindbergh research in my background and was thrilled to discuss the process of putting this show together. He has gathered all the pertinent facts, but has added a personal side to the story that has never found its way into any of the books and movies I've seen about Col. Lindbergh.

Mr. Carroll has plans to take this show on the road, and is indeed eager reach out to groups and organizations that may be interested in providing a venue. As Lindbergh's 100th birthday approaches no doubt his name will once again be on the minds of many, especially here in New Jersey.
